Many people get the urge to follow a new career path at some stage in their lives. It can be a daunting move to make, but if you can gather the courage to go for it, you’ll never look back.

One of the main reasons people become disillusioned with their jobs is because their passions and interests change over time.

Work in IT but always had a passion for writing? Or want to make the jump from finance to design? It’s a big step, but there’s no better time. Here are our top tips for getting started on your new path.

          1. Figure out – and describe – your ideal job
It’s kind of like being back in university – the world is your oyster. What sets your soul alight? Take a few hours – or even days – to sit down and figure out exactly what you’d like to pursue. Write it down, create a diagram – whatever suits you. Include details on why you dislike your current role and what needs to be different in the new one. Consider your skillset – how can you apply it to the new role? Getting everything down on paper helps get your thoughts in order.

          2. Put out feelers in your network
Contacts can be very, very useful when it comes to switching jobs. Ask around trusted contacts about any roles, companies or recruiters they could recommend. You never know what opportunity might arise.

          3. Keep learning
Depending on how long you’ve been out of uni, you might be out of practise when it comes to conscious learning. But if you’re looking to dive into a new industry, doing a little research is essential. Stock up on books, read articles – and even check out online courses you can do according to your own schedule.

          4. Boost your LinkedIn presence
These days, LinkedIn is invaluable in the pairing of professionals and opportunities. By maximising your LinkedIn presence you’ll be far more likely to get on prospective employers’ radars. Use the alumni search tool to discover connections, post links and articles you find interesting, and – above all – make sure your profile is up to date with all your previous experience and expertise.

          5. Approach recruiters
You can find recruiters who specialise in a wide range of industries, so do a little research and then reach out to some who focus on the places you’re interested in. Recruiters are excellent to have on-side – not only do they find you suitable openings, they often also coach you on interview tactics and let you know what areas you need to improve on in order to bag a great role.

          6. Refresh your CV
When was the last time you updated your CV? It’s essential to keep your CV up to date, as well as tailoring it to every job you apply for. Depending on the role you’re looking for, you can use your CV to help you stand out. If you’re going for a creative role, make sure your CV has a little extra something to grab attention, for example.

          7. Refresh your wardrobe
Treat yourself to something new to wear to interviews – especially if it’s been a while since you last had one. While it’s not exactly essential – you may already have a lucky suit or outfit you’d prefer to wear – new clothes can boost confidence and help you feel new and refreshed. A great way to begin your new professional journey.
